With enthusiasm for music at an early age, he began playing piano and violin growing up in Boise, Idaho.  Soon followed by the guitar and electric bass.  Focusing on the string bass he continued his study of classical music, also falling in love with Jazz, and the world of  Rock and Popular music.

Jay took his musical endeavors to Portland, Oregon where he played in the renowned band Genesis under director Dave Barduhn.  Here, he performed and shared the stage with the likes of such jazz heavyweights as Jeff Hamilton, Kevin Mahogany, Curtis Stigers and Nancy King.  As a member of Genesis, Multanen received three Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards.

Soon JayMul ventured to Los Angeles in creative pursuit of freelance music and studio work.  In 2006 Jay was recognized as a John Coltrane Foundation Scholar.  The late Alice Coltrane awarded a grant to Multanen and he was able to study with esteemed Jazz Legend and composer/arranger John Clayton Jr.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2008 while attending the University of California.
